本剧是根据一宗清代冤案而编著的。梁天来（张家辉）与凌贵兴（邵传勇）为表兄弟，两人起初感情甚笃，可惜后因兴垂涎被父卖入妓寨的冬梅（蔡晓仪）美色，而梅不肯作为兴之妾，逃至梁家，被来收留为婢，兴未能成其好事，故对来渐生芥蒂，并处处为难之....。影片以一艘在1925年航向中国的美国炮艇为故事舞台。主人翁贺曼是艇上的海员，喜欢躲在底层的机房工作，不料炮艇驻守中国之后却逼令他跳到甲板上跟各方面的政治和文化压力周旋，复杂的局势发展改变了他独善其身的个性。。Twenty years ago at the infamous Redwood Farm, the owner went mad and killed his family and himself. Shrouded in urban legend ever since, a stranger obsessed with the unsolved Redwood murders convinces a group of bereaved family members to venture into the wilderness in the hope of proving the existence of the notorious burlap bag-masked maniac.
